The parts of a revision clause
A revision clause is the part of a contract that says how many rounds of changes the price covers and what happens after them: for example, two included rounds means the third round is billed, at a price both sides agreed before work began.
A clear clause answers five questions. The generator asks you each one.
- Included rounds
- How many rounds of feedback and updates the agreed price already covers.
- Minor change
- A small adjustment to the agreed work, like a text edit or a colour tweak. Minor changes are handled inside a round.
- Major change
- Something new, or a change to work already approved. Major changes are quoted as new work instead of using up a round.
- Feedback window
- How many business days the client has to reply to each version. Late feedback moves the delivery dates instead of squeezing your time.
- Consolidated feedback
- All feedback for a round arrives together, from one named person. It stops a round from turning into a week of scattered messages.
- Billable round
- Any round after the included ones. The clause names the price per round or per hour so nobody is surprised.
Example clauses compared
These made-up examples come from the same builder you used above. The first three are the presets; the last two show a single included round and an hourly price.
| Example | Rounds included | Feedback window | First billable round | Extra round price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Example: website project | 2 | 5 business days | 3rd | $80 per hour, for the hours the round takes |
| Example: brand identity | 3 | 3 business days | 4th | A fixed fee of £350 per round |
| Example: video edit | 2 | 2 business days | 3rd | A fixed fee of €200 per round |
| Example: one-round logo tweak | 1 | 3 business days | 2nd | A fixed fee of $120 per round |
| Example: app design, hourly | 4 | 3 business days | 5th | ₹2,500 per hour, for the hours the round takes |
Limits of a generated clause
Laws differ by country
Contract rules change from place to place. The clause is written in plain English and is a template, not legal advice. Check it with a lawyer where you work.
It needs a contract around it
A revision clause works inside a full agreement that also covers the price, payment terms, ownership and cancellation. On its own it is not a contract.
Lists are examples, not limits
The minor and major lists say “such as” on purpose. Disagreements still happen, so add your own examples for the kind of work you do most.
A clause only helps if you use it
Tell the client which round you are on as you go. A rule that is first mentioned when the invoice arrives will feel like a surprise, even if it was signed.
Read it as your client would
Before you send it, read the clause once from the client’s side. If any sentence could be read two ways, rewrite it in your own words. Plain wording settles more arguments than clever wording.
Questions about revision clauses
Is the revision clause generator free to use?
Yes. It runs in your browser, nothing you type is uploaded, and you can copy or print the clause without signing up.
How many revision rounds should I include in a contract?
Pick a number you can deliver at your price and say it plainly. Two or three is common for design work; smaller jobs often include one.
What happens if the client never sends feedback?
The clause moves the delivery dates back by the number of days the feedback is late. You can add your own rule, such as pausing the project after a set time.
Should extra rounds be a fixed fee or hourly?
A fixed fee per round is simple to explain and invoice. Hourly suits work where rounds vary a lot in size. The generator writes either one.
Can I use the clause in an existing contract?
You can paste it into a new agreement or add it to an existing one if both sides agree to the change. Check the wording matches the rest of your contract.
What does “approval link” mean in the clause?
It means the client approves each version by pressing an Approve button on a review page you send, instead of replying by email. The clause says that counts as written approval.
Does a revision clause cover bugs or mistakes on my side?
Usually not. Fixing something that does not match what was agreed is part of delivering the work, not a revision round. If you want that spelled out, add a line saying so.
